Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) has become an essential skill for emergency physicians, revolutionizing the way patient care is delivered in urgent settings. The ability to perform ultrasonography at the bedside allows for immediate and accurate diagnosis, which is crucial in emergency medicine where time is of the essence. POCUS enables the identification and assessment of various conditions such as cardiac arrest, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, and trauma-related injuries. It also aids in guiding procedures like central venous catheter placement, reducing potential complications. Comprehensive training in POCUS is now a mandatory component of emergency medicine education in North America, reflecting its importance in clinical practice. The American College of Physicians also recommends the use of POCUS to improve diagnostic performance in patients with acute dyspnea. As a diagnostic tool, POCUS has shown to increase the proportion of correct diagnoses by 32% when used alongside standard diagnostic pathways. Emergency physicians who are proficient in POCUS can significantly enhance patient outcomes by leveraging their skills to make more informed and timely decisions.
